Summary
FreeCAD MCP is a bridge between FreeCAD and Model Context Protocol (MCP) clients such as Claude Desktop. It lets an engineer drive a FreeCAD session from chat, including creating and editing 3D models, running Python scripts inside the CAD environment, inspecting documents, and triggering FEM analyses. The project ships as two cooperating pieces, an in-app FreeCAD addon and a standalone MCP server, so the modeler and the assistant stay in sync over a local connection.
What it is useful for
This is useful when you want conversational or agent-driven control of FreeCAD instead of clicking through menus or writing full scripts by hand. The README shows a demo of designing a flange through Claude, and the project links to additional examples including a toy car, modeling from a 2D drawing, an FEM example, and integrations with LangChain and Google's ADK. It fits workflows where a user wants to sketch a part, iterate on dimensions, or run a finite-element solve by describing intent rather than typing every FreeCAD Python call. Because the addon exposes FreeCAD's Python interface, it is also handy for inspecting an open document, modifying parameters on existing bodies, or running scripts in the background while continuing other work in the GUI.
How engineers can use it
The README documents a two-step setup. First, install the FreeCAD addon:
git clone https://github.com/neka-nat/freecad-mcp.git
cd freecad-mcp
Copy addon/FreeCADMCP into your FreeCAD addon directory (the README links to docs/installation.md for platform-specific paths and screenshots), restart FreeCAD, switch to the MCP Addon workbench, and click Start RPC Server in the FreeCAD MCP toolbar. Second, connect a client. For Claude Desktop, add the following to claude_desktop_config.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"freecad": {
"command": "uvx",
"args": ["freecad-mcp"]
}
}
}
Restart Claude Desktop, keep FreeCAD open with the RPC server running, and ask the assistant to build or modify a model. The server talks to FreeCAD over localhost by default. The repository links to separate guides for installation, configuration (auto-start, text feedback, remote connections), available tools, code execution modes including headless and background jobs, and demos, which an engineer should consult for anything beyond the basic flow. Note: the README assumes FreeCAD and uv/uvx are already installed, so install those first if they are missing on your machine.
