Free and open-source macOS menu bar toolkit

Summary

Vorssaint is a free, open-source macOS menu bar application written in Swift that bundles many standalone system utilities behind a single icon. It is local-first, ships under the GPL-3.0 license, and provides signed, notarized builds alongside full source code. Engineers on Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 14 Sonoma or newer can install it through Homebrew or build it locally with the included build.sh.

What it is useful for

Vorssaint replaces several utilities Mac users typically purchase individually. Concrete examples from the README include a per-application volume mixer with boost above 100%, a system monitor showing CPU, GPU, memory, temperatures and battery health, and an Alt-Tab-style app switcher with live window previews. It also adds a window snapper, Dock window previews, clipboard history with image and file support, text snippets with date/time variables, a Homebrew manager, and an uninstaller that reviews related caches before moving apps to the Trash. Additional features cover screen recording with separate system-audio and microphone tracks, offline OCR for text on screen, a "Keep awake" mode that respects the lid-closed state, mouse enhancements such as focus-follows-mouse and linear scrolling, and a Dynamic Island-style area for media, timers and notifications.

A few documented limitations matter for adoption: the project explicitly requires Apple Silicon and macOS 14 or newer, the Fan Control feature is labeled beta, and many features require macOS permissions such as Accessibility that must be granted by the user. Each permission is optional, and the project explains which features need which access.

How engineers can use it

For day-to-day use, the README documents two install paths. With Homebrew:

brew install --cask vorssaint

Alternatively, download the disk image from the GitHub releases page and drag the app into Applications.

To build from source, the README documents:

git clone https://github.com/vorssaint/vorssaint-utils.git
cd vorssaint-utils
./build.sh --dev --install

Only Xcode Command Line Tools are listed as a prerequisite, and a separate Developer variant is produced with the --dev flag. The repo also includes ./Tools/uninstall.sh for complete removal including settings and granted permissions.

Because the source is on GitHub, contributors can read the AppKit and SwiftUI code, audit the privacy claims through the linked privacy document, and submit pull requests. The contributing guide, permissions guide and troubleshooting document are linked from the README for engineers wanting to dig into behavior or file issues.
