OpenWiki is a CLI that writes and maintains agent documentation for your codebase. - langchain-ai/openwiki

Summary

OpenWiki is a TypeScript CLI that generates and maintains a Markdown wiki for a codebase, with each page's facts traced back to versioned source evidence called Grounded Claims. It runs either inside a supported coding agent or as a standalone command, writing output to an openwiki/ directory in the repository. The Claims system lets later updates focus only on facts whose evidence has changed, so a clean update can skip model work entirely.

What it is useful for

  • Bootstrapping repository documentation without manually writing it, then asking the same agent to query it for context on later tasks.
  • Grouping related repositories (for example a control plane, data plane, and infrastructure repo) into a named workspace with openwiki link, so a coding agent can search across all of them.
  • Producing an interactive node graph of the wiki for visual exploration, or exporting a static visualizer directory that can be hosted on GitHub Pages or MkDocs.
  • Generating scheduled docs PRs from CI on every change using the example workflows for GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, and Bitbucket Pipelines.
  • Filtering out private, generated, or irrelevant paths with a .openwikiignore file using gitignore-style syntax with ! negation.

How engineers can use it

  1. Install with Node.js 22.22.0 or newer using npm install -g openwiki.
  2. Inside a supported coding agent (Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, Cursor, IBM Bob, Kiro, Oh My Pi, Antigravity, GitHub Copilot, or Pi), run openwiki integrations install <host>, restart the agent, and ask it to initialize the repository. Outside an agent, run openwiki --init from the repo root, which prompts for a provider and model on the first run.
  3. After code changes, run openwiki --update or ask the agent to update the wiki. Clean updates skip model work and only refresh openwiki/.last-update.json.
  4. For multi-repo services, run openwiki link from a parent directory to create a workspace, then use openwiki workspace use <name> to set the active scope.
  5. Explore with openwiki visualize (default port 4321) or export a static site with openwiki visualize openwiki --export docs/openwiki-visualizer.
  6. Copy one of the example CI workflows to keep the wiki current on every change; the GitHub Actions example expects an OPENWIKI_PR_TOKEN Actions secret with Contents and Pull requests write access.

Documented limitations: coding-agent integrations currently support repository wikis only, not personal brains, and do not include connector-sourced context such as LangSmith. The visualizer loads its graph, Markdown, and diagram libraries from a public CDN, so an internet connection is required. Native CLI runs support page concurrency from 1 to 8, and a worker that hits a provider rate limit lowers concurrency by one for the rest of the run.
