Native autocomplete popup for the macOS terminal. The completion part of Fig, rebuilt as a small local app. No account, no AI, no telemetry. - en3sis/figxit

Summary

Figxit is a native macOS autocomplete popup for zsh, bash, and fish that suggests commands, subcommands, options, package.json scripts, Makefile targets, and some live values while you type. It runs locally with no account, AI chat, or telemetry; the only network request is the optional daily update check. The app can read Atuin history to rank suggestions by recent or project-specific use.

What it is useful for

  • Project commands: Typing make lists targets from the current Makefile and included files, including ## help text and ##@ sections. npm run , pnpm , yarn , and bun run list package scripts, so engineers can find a task without recalling its exact name.
  • CLI discovery: The README says specs cover more than 700 tools. For example, git ch narrows Git subcommands, while docker run -- shows options with descriptions and hides options already present on the line. Specs can also provide Git branches after git checkout , SSH hosts, and path values.
  • Faster repeated work: Atuin is optional, but when present, suggestions used in the same folder or repository, or used recently, receive higher ranking. For commands with a spec, history from other folders is excluded to avoid one project’s scripts appearing in another project’s list.
  • Production cues: Capitalized names, names containing prod or production, and tagged Makefile help such as release: ## [prod] Publish the app get a red icon. This is only a visual warning; it does not block execution.

How engineers can use it

On an Apple Silicon Mac running macOS 13 or later, download Figxit.dmg, drag the app into Applications, and open it. In the setup window, click Add for the detected login shell, then open a new terminal or tmux pane. Try make , npm run , or git ch; use figxit doctor if setup needs checking. Bash must be version 5 or later, and fish must be version 4; macOS’s bundled /bin/bash 3.2 is unsupported.

The popup does not appear in terminal panels embedded in VS Code, Cursor, or similar editors, and native terminal splits are also unsupported; use a standalone terminal or tmux. Bash and fish vi mode is unsupported, values after options ending in = are not suggested, and live-service generators show nothing if the service does not answer within 1.5 seconds. The app is macOS-only.

For source work, install Bun and the Xcode command line tools, run bun install in engine/, then use make dev for reloading or make test for unit tests. The README also documents make e2e, make smoke, and make build.
