Community plugin to control Blender 3D with any LLM of your choice

Summary

MCP for Blender is a Python-based, third-party community integration that connects MCP-compatible LLM clients to Blender. It combines a Blender add-on socket server with an MCP server, enabling prompt-assisted modeling, scene changes, and inspection of the live Blender scene.

What it is useful for

This project is useful for engineers who want to build or automate Blender workflows through an AI assistant rather than perform every operation manually. The assistant can create, modify, and delete 3D objects; apply materials and colors; and write Blender Python for modeling, layout, animation, rigging, and retopology.

It also provides scene inspection and visual feedback. The get_scene_info tool returns details such as object placement, materials, topology, and weights, while look can show viewport, camera, multi-angle, wireframe, X-ray, animation-strip, and rendered views. For example, an engineer could ask for a scene with particular objects and materials, inspect its structure, and then request a rendered view to check the result.

The repository also documents asset workflows involving Poly Haven, Sketchfab, Poly Pizza, and several AI model generators, although some generators are part of its premium offering.

How engineers can use it

The documented prerequisites are Blender 3.0 or newer, Python 3.10 or newer, and uv. If uv is already installed, the simplest setup is:

uvx mcp-for-blender setup

The setup command detects supported MCP clients, lets you choose which ones to configure, installs the Blender add-on, enables it, and backs up configuration files it changes. New installations should use the mcp-for-blender package name; existing uvx blender-mcp setups remain compatible.

The README also provides one-command installers for macOS, Linux, and Windows. After setup, fully restart the AI application, open Blender, and find the MCP for Blender tab in the sidebar. If needed, start the server there. Manual add-on installation is also documented:

uvx mcp-for-blender install-addon

Then enable Interface: MCP for Blender under Blender’s Add-ons preferences. For manual Claude Code registration, the README documents:

claude mcp add blender uvx mcp-for-blender

Run only one MCP server instance at a time. Also note that the Blender socket has no authentication or encryption, so keep it on localhost or a trusted network. By default, the assistant can execute arbitrary Python inside Blender; setting BLENDER_MCP_SAFE_MODE=1 enables script checks that block operations such as direct file access, network access, and persistent code execution.
