Summary

RDST is an always-on agent that connects read-only to PostgreSQL or MySQL databases, watches the database's own query statistics every minute, and ranks slow queries alongside concrete fixes such as missing indexes, server-setting changes, query rewrites, or vacuum actions. It surfaces each recommendation with the time it saves, the queries it speeds up, step-by-step instructions for bare servers as well as RDS, Aurora, Cloud SQL, and Azure, and SQL the engineer can copy with an undo statement where one applies.

What it is useful for

  • Triaging slow-query backlogs on PostgreSQL or MySQL without writing one-off analysis scripts or deploying a proxy.
  • Catching regressions: RDST flags queries that got slower, plus ones that spiked or stopped running, and ranks them by share of database time.
  • Producing explainable fixes: the agent runs EXPLAIN against the schema, then proposes a specific change (for example "raise work_mem so sorts stay in memory") with the SQL to apply and revert.
  • Working with managed instances, since the generated instructions cover RDS, Aurora, Cloud SQL, and Azure in addition to self-hosted servers.
  • Wiring database context into AI tooling, since the CLI can register RDST as an MCP server for Claude Code.

How engineers can use it

The repository ships four pieces: a Python cli/ (the rdst command and its HTTP API), a web/ browser UI served by rdst web, a desktop/ Electron shell that bundles the CLI as a local sidecar, and shared packages/ for the design system.

The fastest documented path is the CLI from PyPI, which works on macOS or Linux without sudo:

pip install rdst
rdst init # guided setup for your first Postgres or MySQL target
rdst top # live view of the slowest queries hitting it
rdst analyze # why a query is slow, and what an index or cache would do
rdst web # the full RDST UI in your browser
rdst claude add # register RDST as an MCP server for Claude Code

Alternatively, a one-line installer (curl -fsSL https://downloads.readyset.io/packages/rdst-cli/install.sh | sh) or pip install "git+https://github.com/readysettech/rdst.git#subdirectory=cli" works, and packaged desktop builds exist for macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Connection uses a read-only user, and the README provides the SQL to create one. RDST never writes to the database; passwords live in the OS credential store, and AI features send SQL text, plans, and schema but never row data.

Building from source requires Node 22+, pnpm 11, Python 3.10+, and uv, with Python 3.12 needed specifically for the desktop sidecar build (pnpm --filter rdst-desktop build:sidecar). The README notes the CLI's bundled SQLite must be new enough to be WAL-safe; when it is not, the dev launchers list the interpreters they tried. Desktop builds from this source have auto-update switched off and product analytics compiled out unless a build-time key is supplied.
