Open repository ↗A self-organizing Obsidian vault that gives AI coding agents persistent memory. Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI
Summary
Obsidian Mind is an Obsidian vault template that gives AI coding agents persistent memory across sessions. It ships hooks that inject context — goals, active projects, recent decisions — at session start, with full Claude Code support and hooks for Codex and Gemini CLI. The vault lives as plain Markdown in brain/, browsable in Obsidian and readable to agents.
What it is useful for
Engineers who start every Claude Code session re-explaining the same context. The README's /om-standup example shows the SessionStart hook reporting "You have 2 active projects. The auth refactor is blocked on API contract" without prompting. After a 1:1, /om-dump "..." creates a dated meeting note, a decision record ("Defer Redis migration to Q2"), a person note, and a brag-doc entry from one brain-dump. /om-incident-capture <slack-url> delegates to slack-archaeologist and people-profiler subagents to assemble a Slack-based timeline. The om MCP server exposes search, expand, recall, and remember to other repos, so constraints learned in one codebase stay reachable from another.
How engineers can use it
Install (ShardMind, the path the README recommends):
npm install -g shardmind
mkdir my-vault && cd my-vault
shardmind install github:breferrari/obsidian-mind
Or clone directly: git clone https://github.com/breferrari/obsidian-mind.git. Either way, open the folder as an Obsidian vault, enable Obsidian CLI in Settings → General (requires Obsidian 1.12+), run claude, codex, or gemini from the directory, and — for direct clones — fill in brain/North Star.md yourself. ShardMind writes it for you during install.
Optional semantic search:
npm install -g @tobilu/qmd
node --experimental-strip-types .scripts/qmd-bootstrap.ts
QMD runs three local models (~328MB, ~1.28GB, ~640MB) with no API key. Without QMD, the agent falls back to grep and the Obsidian CLI; the README explicitly states the vault still works, just with worse ordering.
Reach the vault from other repos:
claude mcp add --scope user om node "/absolute/path/to/your-vault/.claude/scripts/om-mcp.mjs"
The path is absolute and machine-specific — do not commit it to shared repos.
Documented limitations:
Only Claude Code has full support — Codex and Gemini CLI get hooks and commands but not the ~/.claude/ auto-memory loader. Hooks use Node's --experimental-strip-types flag, stable in 22.6+ and default in 23.6+; a future Node release could require updating .claude/settings.json, .codex/hooks.json, and .gemini/settings.json. The Claude Code mod at .claude/skills/obsidian-mind/ requires v2.1.287+ and runs unsandboxed — review it with claude plugin validate before trusting the folder.
